Yesterday marked a unique graduation day for a unique student from a unique school.
Eight years ago, we knew that this bright kid needed a school that could unlock his potential – one that didn’t just understand autism, but saw the potential in people and knew how to draw it out. Patrick started Miriam School unable to speak in his own words. He could only express himself using lines from movies, books and poems.
Yesterday, on his last day of school he turned in an eloquent creative writing story of his own words and ideas. He struggled to bring his thoughts out of the reaches of his mind but his teacher, Mrs. Barnes was able to encourage and coax him until his mental floodgates opened.
I am so proud of him, and I am so grateful for the school, staff, and educators that contributed their time, talent, and LOVE for the last eight years to this year’s winner of the Presidential Award for Outstanding Academic Excellence!
High school, here we come!
