Curriculum

Learning is never one-size-fits-all. Our flexible curriculum ensures each student is supported at the right level, and prepared for life after graduation.

Miriam High School provides three curriculum paths: Challenge, Core, and Concepts. For each subject, students are placed in the pathway that fits their abilities and future goals. They can move between paths, and may be working in more than one pathway at a time. Our staff partner with families to adjust placements as students grow, ensuring every student is both supported and challenged. You can download our full course guide here.

Challenge:

Designed for students who are learning at or above grade level.

The Challenge curriculum provides a college prep program. It includes coursework with meaningful homework assigned three to four days per week. These skills will lead to successful experiences in college or postsecondary programs. The focus is on constructive responses, critical thinking, skills/analysis and independent task completion.

Core:

Designed for students learning at or near grade level.

The Core curriculum prepares students for a variety of pathways, including vocational, college or postsecondary programs. Meaningful homework is assigned two to three days per week. Similar to Challenge, the focus is on constructive responses, critical thinking, skills/analysis, and independent task completion with accommodations for individual profiles.

Concepts:

Designed for students learning below grade level.

The Concepts curriculum provides a functional skills-based curriculum with targeted interventions as needed per course. Homework is assigned when in-class work is not completed. These skills will lead to successful independent experiences (ex: personal finance and self care). This curriculum level focuses on the development of independent responses, task completion, and skills for life.

Miriam Essentials

The Miriam Essentials Curriculum addresses the whole child, ensuring that when each student leaves Miriam, they are ready to take on the next step of their journey

Our daily program, called Miriam Essentials, builds skills for life inside and outside the classroom. Students practice academics, life skills, health and wellness, social connections, and college/career readiness. The goal is simple, to make sure every student leaves Miriam prepared for what comes next.

“I think the individualized approach has been the most impactful for Jonathan. They’ve identified his strengths and areas where he could use more support, then built that learning plan just for him. It has given him confidence and space to find his place as a leader.”

Miriam student participating in an election

As the 2024 election approaches, I have been fascinated observing how differently our students are processing and engaging with the election compared to those at the traditional college preparatory school where I previously worked. Our faculty and staff have noted relatively little conversation among students about the election despite the prevalence of viewpoints on TikTok and other social media sites about the election and candidates.
