Speech Therapy
Serving families across St. Louis City, St. Louis County, and St. Charles County, our therapy services support children ages 2–18 with a wide range of developmental, physical, and communication needs. Each session is individualized to help children gain the skills they need to thrive.
When a child tries to communicate something and others cannot understand what he or she says, the child may become frustrated and act out in ways that show others how the child is feeling. When parents or educators have a concern about a child’s speech, they should turn to experts who understand what is and is not appropriate speech for different age groups. MLC’s speech therapy can assess a child’s ability to verbalize sounds and words in a way that the listener can understand what the child is saying. Then based upon this informal assessment, speech therapy can help the child improve upon delayed areas. Formal speech assessments are also available through Miriam’s testing department.
Identifying the Cause of Delays
Delays in mastering some speech sounds may be age appropriate. However, when a child is behind in producing legible speech sounds or words, the delay can be related to Apraxia (difficulty planning the movements needed to speak), selective mutism, autism spectrum disorder, cerebral palsy, intellectual disabilities, and expressive language disorders. Speech therapy can focus on teaching non-verbal forms of communication, helping the child move his or her lips, tongue, and jaw to make speech sounds, and putting sounds together into intelligible words so others can understand what is said.
Therapy Tailored to Each Child
Our licensed speech language pathologists will design an individualized treatment plan for each child participating the speech therapy. Parents may participate in therapy so they can learn techniques they can practice within the home environment to improve upon their child’s speech. Children usually attend speech therapy one time per week for 50 minutes and, when appropriate, the therapist provides a home program to continue progress throughout the remainder of the week. We can provide speech therapy within the school, preschool or daycare environment, when permitted by the child’s school.
