Empowering Unique Learners

Occupational Therapy

Serving families across St. Louis City, St. Louis County, and St. Charles County, our therapy services support children ages 2–18 with a wide range of developmental, physical, and communication needs. Each session is individualized to help children gain the skills they need to thrive.

Many children who attend Miriam Learning Center for occupational therapy have difficulty with fine motor skills such as handwriting, typing, and shoe tying. They often struggle with gross motor skills such as jumping, running, and hopping and can have sensory issues with sounds, smells, and food textures that make focusing at school problematic. Our licensed pediatric occupational therapists help children learn to calm their sensory seeking/avoiding bodies, addressing symptoms of Sensory Processing Disorder and gain age appropriate fine and gross motor skills.

Individualized Treatment

Through individualized treatment, the occupational therapist determines the best way for a child to acquire the functional skills needed to become independent in age-appropriate competencies. Interventions may include research-based writing programs, motor planning instruction, practice, demonstration, crossing midline activities, muscle-strengthening exercises, balance and coordination activities, and other interventions that can help achieve a child’s goals.

Additionally, sensory integration therapy can help a child learn what types of activities activate or stabilize their neurological system so they can emotionally become regulated and more ready to learn. Twenty minutes of activities focusing on deep pressure (weighted vests) and proprioceptive input (trampolines, swings) can prepare a child’s body and mind for several hours of attentive learning. Sensory integration training can also help offset or lessen a child’s aversion to sounds, textures, foods, and smells. Children usually attend occupational therapy for one 50-minute session per week.

A Purpose-Built Environment for Progress

Miriam’s Webster Groves campus has a huge therapy gym perfect for the child who needs to experience different sensory input to see what will help level out their neurological system. This environment is optimal for children with an autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, or Sensory Processing Disorder. We can easily adapt other environments with hippity-hop balls, trampolines, and other equipment that will give sensory input to children receiving treatment in other locations.

As a child ages, the skills he/she must master become more complex. Occupational therapy builds the foundation for these skills by developing different core and fine motor muscle groups, improving bilateral coordination and balance, helping with visual motor skills, and identifying and reinforcing deep pressure and proprioceptive input.
