Occupational Therapy Testing

Serving families in St. Louis City, St. Louis County, and St. Charles County, our diagnostic assessments are designed to identify factors impacting academic and social success. By identifying individual strengths and challenges, we provide personalized recommendations to support your child’s success.

An occupational therapy evaluation is usually the first step needed to identify any sensory related issues or fine and gross motor delays your child may have. We can test children ages 2 through 18. We use standardized tests during the evaluation and compare your child’s performance to other children their age. The scores we obtain lets the therapist know if your child’s skills are on target or if your child is experiencing fine or gross motor skill delays or sensory related issues. The occupational therapy testing provides recommendations that address the needs of the child within the home, school environment and community.

Evaluation Process and Scheduling

We can usually schedule an occupational therapy evaluation within two weeks of the referral. Children attend one, two-hour session for the evaluation. Parents will complete standardized rating scales and with parent permission, school personnel may complete rating scales. The occupational therapist will also interview the parent and student to collect appropriate background information.

The occupational therapist will evaluate the following areas:

  • Hand muscle functioning
  • Handwriting/pencil grasp
  • Cutting, drawing and other fine motor skills
  • Self-care skills
  • Jumping, skipping and other age appropriate gross motor skills
  • Sensory sensitivity/avoidance

Results and Recommendations

After testing is finished, the occupational therapist writes a formal evaluation report. Our occupational therapist will review the evaluation results with you and anyone else you wish to include. This consultation lasts about one hour.
