Empowering Unique Learners

Autism Testing

Serving families in St. Louis City, St. Louis County, and St. Charles County, our diagnostic assessments are designed to identify factors impacting academic and social success. By identifying individual strengths and challenges, we provide personalized recommendations to support your child’s success.

In 2020, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) reported that 1 in 36 children in the United States received an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) diagnosis, and the prevalence of this disorder is on the rise. Autism is a social communication disorder with symptoms that include repetitive behaviors and restricted interests, lack of eye contract, difficulties with social interactions with peers and possible sensory issues.  Early diagnosis of this disorder is important to help children learn skills they will need to interact in our world as they become older.

Miriam has been diagnosing children with autism since 2007. Our autism testing has helped many children get the interventions they need to improve functional communication and self-regulation skills.

Testing Sessions and Parent Involvement

Our multi-disciplined autism testing teams work together to decipher the many symptoms students exhibit, leading to a diagnosis and treatment pathway. We evaluate children ages 2 to 18 and can accommodate children who are not verbal. Our testing coordinator is generally able to schedule testing within one month of a referral.

Depending upon the required testing, children may need to participate in testing for one to three, one- or two-hour testing sessions. Parents will participate in a clinical interview and potentially participate in some modules if the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS-2) test is used. For children with milder symptoms, we may use standardized rating scales instead of the ADOS-2. A child’s school may also need to complete rating scales to get a picture of your child in numerous environments. Once we complete testing, the lead therapist will compile testing results into a written report and a Missouri Licensed Clinical Social Worker may render a medical diagnosis using the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Disorders (DSM-5-TR), the same medical diagnosis manual that psychiatrists, doctors and psychologists use. We provide a medical diagnosis. Medical diagnoses may not qualify students for an education diagnosis in their school. Our licensed clinician reviews the evaluation results with parents and anyone else they wish to include. This consultation lasts up to one hour.
