Why a Plan After High School Matters

Having a plan after high school, whether it's college, a certificate program, or employment, can have a powerful impact on a student’s future. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, individuals with a high school diploma earn about $10,000 more per year than those without one. That number climbs significantly with each level of education. A bachelor's degree, for example, can result in average earnings of $31,000 more per year compared to completing high school.
Education also strongly affects employment stability. On average in 2024, the unemployment rate for those without a high school diploma was more than double that of those with a bachelor’s degree (bls.gov). During economic downturns, those without a diploma are often the first to be laid off (ppic.org). Postsecondary education and career training not only improve income potential, they offer long-term protection against unemployment.
