Admissions FAQ

A: Miriam serves students in Kindergarten through 12th Grade with complex learning differences from more than 50 zip codes in the greater St. Louis area. 

Our students possess average to above average intelligence, yet may face academic and social challenges in typical classrooms. Students at the Miriam thrive academically and socially in our low student to faculty ratio, welcoming community and multi-grade blended classrooms.

We make every effort to articulate our vision for education as clearly as possible, so that parents can make an informed decision when considering our school.

Miriam welcomes applicants:

• With complex learning needs including diagnosed learning disabilities, anxiety, attention deficits, speech/language delays, fine/gross motor delays, Level 1 autism, and sensory concerns
• With average to above average cognitive ability as measured by recent formal testing
• Who would benefit from our small class sizes, personalized learning approach and integrated therapies
• Who are free of any behavioral or emotional concerns, are fully verbal, and are independent in toileting and self-care
• Who are free of medical diagnoses requiring on-site medical personnel

A: Not all students will find their best fit at Miriam.

While we understand that students may carry secondary diagnoses in addition to learning differences or attention deficits, Miriam is not equipped to meet the needs of students with these primary concerns:

• Behavior Intervention Plans
• Aggressive or Disruptive Behaviors
• Emotional or Mood Disorders
• Intellectual or Cognitive Disabilities
• Significant Medical Diagnoses

Outreach Services

While Miriam's Schools are not equipped to meet these needs at this time, we do offer outreach services through the Miriam Learning Center. The Learning Center is ideal for students who will remain in their current educational environment, but need specialized in-school or out-of-school support services to meet their potential.

A: We do not require students to have an educational or medical diagnosis, but we do require testing to help us better understand where students are experiencing difficulty.

In order to develop a comprehensive learning profile for each student we require copies of individually administered tests from educational, neurological, psychological and/or psychiatric professionals. The Admissions Office may request additional testing if they feel they need more information about a student.

Testing can be performed at the Miriam Learning Center at a lower cost that you may expect to pay elsewhere.

A: Miriam evaluates applicants on a wide range of considerations, and we must be confident we are able to meet the needs of the students we enroll. 

Preliminary qualifications include documented average to above average intelligence, the ability to succeed in our classroom ratios and get along socially with peers, the ability to form collaborative relationships with teachers and the need for speech/language and occupational therapies.

A: There is no deadline to apply for a Miriam school.

We have a rolling admissions policy that admits qualified students throughout the year based on availability.

A: After an application is received and the admissions committee determines that the school may be a good fit for the potential student, prospective students participate in a two-day shadow process to experience our environment.

A: Yes! Miriam is committed to meeting the needs of students who benefit from our programs. 

The tuition at Miriam is not “one size fits all.” Rather, we match your tuition rate to your family’s unique financial position. 

After the student visit is scheduled, families interested in our Variable Tuition Program can simply submit an application to a confidential third-party service online. Based on their recommendation and a review by our administration team, your variable tuition rate is determined. 

Miriam also works with MOScholars Grants and MOST 529 Accounts to cover tuition costs.

A: Miriam Learning Center is our outreach branch that is ideal for students who will remain in their current educational environment, but need specialized in-school or out-of-school support services to meet their potential.

Miriam Learning Center helps children and young adults who learn differently, become confident and successful learners. Each year, the Learning Center serves over 1,600 students, who come from many different private, public, or parochial schools, and those who are homeschooled.

More than 120 certified/licensed professionals ensure that each student receives the individualized attention that can make a difference in his or her academic performance and social and emotional growth.
