Michael started at Miriam last year, and – as a sophomore in high school – he finally fell in love with learning.
Michael describes Miriam as “a loving, learning space where students and staff can connect with each other,” and I could not agree more. Michael’s learning, attention and executive function challenges were identified earlier in his life, but until Miriam, we had not found a school that could support those needs while providing strong academics for a college-bound student.
In all these years, no other organization, school or mental health institution has provided a “detailed map” to support how he could and would become an adult who will make a difference in his own life and in the lives of others. That is why Michael is at Miriam High School.
I first learned of Miriam from a colleague who encouraged me to reach out for a tour. After touring and meeting with Mrs. Pruitt and Mrs. Thurman, plus meeting several teachers, our first impression was so positive. Feedback from colleagues in the special education community confirmed all of our impressions of Miriam High School!
We recently met with Michael’s academic, counseling and transition team to review the ILP that was developed for Michael. I was completely amazed at all of the work that this team put into preparing such a comprehensive plan for Michael’s current and future college academic needs, and the preparation for providing him with life skills that will enable and support his efforts to be a productive adult.
Michael’s teachers inspire and motivate him to strive to be the best student he is capable of being and to reach his level of capability. Miriam also offers an amazing transition program and community outreach opportunities.
Our family will be forever grateful for the incredible Miriam team and program!
