Meet Leo: Finding His Love for Reading at Miriam
Katie Stalter

Leo recently enjoyed a pizza party with his classmates. The occasion? Leo achieved a BIG goal in reading - and more quickly than expected!

In 2022, when Leo started at Miriam in third grade, he had a strong dislike for school. He did not receive the support he needed from his previous school to navigate his learning disabilities. Leo struggled to read and wasn’t making progress academically.

After receiving his diagnoses and recommendations, his parents faced a difficult decision. “We knew it was either stay in his school and have appointments every day after school for private services, or go to a school where he would get these much-needed services seamlessly, throughout the day.”

Those services included specialty tutoring and speech therapy. After visiting Miriam, Leo’s mom, Jill, said there was no question which way they would go. “We knew that Leo would thrive there.”

Now in his third year at Miriam, Leo is indeed flourishing.

“Miriam has been nothing short of amazing,” Jill said. “We have seen so much change in Leo over his time here. He no longer says that he hates school, he has developed a strong patience and empathy for others, and he feels like he has the chance to learn.”

Karen Hacker, Leo’s reading teacher, praised his transformation. After intensive reading interventions, Leo not only feels confident in his abilities but is also motivated to read. “Things really began to click for him,” Karen said.

Leo has always loved books, but he was never able to read them on his own. Now, he can truly own the experience of reading. He has developed a passion for nonfiction and always has a long list of topics he’s eager to research.

In addition to reading, Leo has made significant strides in science and social studies.

Jennifer Coe, Leo’s teacher at Miriam, calls him an independent thinker. “He is very curious and knowledgeable about many things. Leo has made gains this year with initiating and completing activities - and he has great stories to add to whatever topic we are discussing!”

Leo’s parents have seen positive changes that reach beyond academics. “My husband often jokes that Leo is the most well-adjusted person in our house,” Jill said. “He brings home strategies to address feelings and challenges, and he teaches them to us.”

Leo now recognizes when he needs help, and he is able to advocate for himself.

Jill and her husband, Eamon, have several favorite aspects of Miriam. “One is the problem solving approach of the teachers. They are always looking for more information to find the just-right intervention or scaffold for their learners,” Jill said.

“We also love the onsite counseling offered at the school. Leo needed grief counseling following the loss of his dear friend,” she said. “The team at Miriam came together to help him through one of the most difficult experiences of his young life. Our appreciation for this will never go away.”

As for Leo, his favorite parts of school include sensory diet in the occupational therapy room, becoming a confident reader, and spending time with his friends - as well as two universal favorites, Pizza Friday and the talent show.

Although his special pizza party is in the past, Leo has a lifetime of reading to look forward to - and his progress will continue with the support built in at Miriam. Jill said, “He is on a path that will lead him to grade-level success.”

If this story sounds familiar, you’re not alone.

Many Miriam families come to us looking for a school that truly understands and supports their child. Often, their children are navigating ADHD, level 1 autism, anxiety, language processing disorders, or other learning differences, and they’ve found that traditional school environments simply aren’t built with those needs in mind.

At Miriam, support isn’t something families have to advocate for to get. It’s built into everything we do through expert staff, a personalized curriculum, and integrated therapies. Every aspect is designed to help your child thrive. If you or your child is feeling overwhelmed or unsupported in a traditional school setting, Miriam could be the right fit for your family. As a first-time mother, I found out while pregnant with my daughter Starlit that I was sick with an environmental cancer. I was told that if I had not been pregnant, they may not have found my cancer in time to save me. I was determined then to do whatever was best for my precious daughter, no matter what. At that time, this meant I would win this battle so I could watch her grow.
