Meet Jaden: Shining in Miriam’s Supportive, Understanding Environment
Jennifer Windler, Jaden's Mother

I watched my daughter Jaden slowly slip through the cracks of the public school system. She couldn’t read, write, or do basic math, yet year after year, she was moved ahead simply because she had an IEP.

Even after being diagnosed with learning disabilities, her teachers weren’t trained to teach in a way her brain could understand. It wasn’t that Jaden wasn’t trying—she was giving everything she had. But I could see the light in her eyes dimming a little more each day. She came home exhausted, defeated, and frustrated.

After spending all day trying to learn in a way that didn’t make sense to her, she was expected to sit down for more online tutoring. Most nights ended in tears — hers and sometimes mine. It broke my heart to see her feel like she was failing when I knew it was the system failing her.

But then, little by little, the tutoring started to help. She began reading short sentences, and the joy on her face the first time she read something on her own was unforgettable. That’s when I knew for sure that she just needed to be taught in the way her brain learns best. I made a promise to find a school where she could be understood, supported, and finally believe in herself again.

When I realized Jaden needed a reading program based on the Orton-Gillingham approach, I started searching online — hoping to find a place that could truly help her. That’s when I discovered Miriam. Every person I talked to who knew about the school had only wonderful things to say. Whether they had a child there or knew one who had attended, they all described Miriam as life-changing. Hearing those stories gave me hope that Jaden could finally get the support she needed to thrive.

Since coming to Miriam, Jaden has rediscovered her confidence and joy in learning. She comes home glowing, eager to tell me everything she learned in class — something she never could do before.

At Miriam, she feels safe to be her true self, and that safety has opened the door to a new kind of excitement. For the first time, she loves reading and math, and it’s incredible to see her shine.

Jaden used to struggle deeply with numbers — she just couldn’t make the connection, and her public school didn’t know how to reach her. They kept pushing concepts she wasn’t ready for, which only left her feeling frustrated and defeated.

At Miriam, everything changed. The teachers met her exactly where she was, helping her move at her own pace and rebuild her confidence. Now she’s starting to truly understand and connect with numbers — and that same growth is happening in her reading and writing, too. Watching her believe in herself again has been incredible.

My favorite thing about Miriam is the way they nurture the whole child. They don’t just focus on academics — they include things like sensory diet, crossing midline activities, social skills, and so much more. Miriam is truly a beautiful place where I know my child is not only learning to read, but also learning how to be a kind, confident, and valued member of a community.

Jaden’s favorite part of her day is Sensory Diet — she looks forward to it so much. She often tells me how kind everyone at Miriam is and how much she loves the way the staff make her feel supported and understood.

I always describe Miriam School as a beautiful dance. Every staff member moves together with such grace and purpose, creating an environment where Jaden can truly shine. They’re all so open, kind, and willing to make changes to support her in the best possible way. I love seeing the OTs and SLPs right there in the classroom, working hand in hand with the teachers — meeting the kids where they are and helping them grow in their natural space. It feels like everyone is part of the same rhythm, lifting the students up together.

What touches me most is that all the staff members know her name; it’s such a welcoming environment. I finally feel like she is understood and getting her needs met.

After so many years of worry and fight, I can finally catch my breath and watch her blossom.

If this story sounds familiar, you’re not alone.

Many Miriam families come to us looking for a school that truly understands and supports their child. Often, their children are navigating ADHD, level 1 autism, anxiety, language processing disorders, or other learning differences, and they’ve found that traditional school environments simply aren’t built with those needs in mind.

At Miriam, support isn’t something families have to advocate for to get. It’s built into everything we do through expert staff, a personalized curriculum, and integrated therapies. Every aspect is designed to help your child thrive. If you or your child is feeling overwhelmed or unsupported in a traditional school setting, Miriam could be the right fit for your family. As a first-time mother, I found out while pregnant with my daughter Starlit that I was sick with an environmental cancer. I was told that if I had not been pregnant, they may not have found my cancer in time to save me. I was determined then to do whatever was best for my precious daughter, no matter what. At that time, this meant I would win this battle so I could watch her grow.
