Empowering Unique Learners
Tools for Teachers' prepares educators for every learner
Katie Stalter

As students’ needs become more complex in classrooms across the country, Miriam School and Learning Center is offering a new program to train teachers to successfully teach students of all abilities.

The Tools for Teachers Program, which started in fall 2025, offers professional development, classroom observation and consultation for faculty members at St. Louis area schools.

The 1.5 days of professional development covers classroom/behavior management and Universal Design for Learning using interactive training techniques. Then, the school receives 3.5 hours of in-classroom observation and consultation for up to 15 teachers.

The Behavior/Classroom Management training dives deep into creating a positive learning environment by addressing topics like establishing classroom procedures, setting expectations, implementing visual schedules, defining positive and negative consequences, and integrating supports for students with sensory difficulties. This is taught through engaging methods such as small group activities, observing video examples of strategies, and participating in team-building exercises.

The Universal Design for Learning (UDL) segment focuses on defining the UDL framework and applying it to support diverse learners. Teachers learn to create lessons using UDL, including hands-on experience using AI-generated programs like magicschool.ai and collaborating in grade-level teams to develop and share new lesson plans.

Jill Holloway, the Miriam special education teacher who is implementing the program, said Tools for Teachers is equipping staff with advanced training and coaching, so they can better support students with learning differences.

“My goal is to spread awareness of useful tools and strategies that help teachers create positive learning opportunities for all students,” Holloway said. “I’m thankful that I can be part of this wonderful program.”

Miriam currently contracts with four schools for Tools for Teachers: North Side Community School, All Saints Academy, Confluence - South City Academy, and St. Joseph School.

Darla Krause, director of student support services at North Side Community School, said the Tools for Teachers training has been a valuable experience for their staff.

“The program gave our general education teachers concrete, effective strategies to strengthen their classroom management,” Krause said. “The combination of professional development and supportive coaching helped teachers pinpoint challenges, apply new interventions and feel more confident meeting the needs of all learners.”

After nearly seven decades, Miriam Switching Post is closing for a hiatus

For nearly 70 years, Miriam Switching Post has been a staple in St. Louis’ resale market, offering upscale furniture, home decor, collectibles, art, and jewelry. Driven by donations and volunteers, the shop’s profits provide financial assistance to families who attend Miriam School, a school for students with learning differences.

In the News: Navigating new routines during back-to-school season

Often, returning to a school year routine can be an adjustment for students, something parents can begin preparing for in the weeks prior to the school year beginning.

“It’s really a good idea to sit with your child and make a check-list for their morning routine,” said Meg Bamford of Miriam School and Learning Center. “What are the things you need to do on their own to get ready in the morning?”
