Miriam High School offers athletics opportunities through MSHSAA
Katie Stalter

Miriam High School is excited to announce that it is now a full member of the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA), which opens up the opportunity for Miriam students to play sports with a partner team.

Due to its small size, Miriam High School has had limited sports offerings for its students over the years. We’ve offered cross country and bowling club the past couple of years, but until now, traditional team sports have been unavailable.

“It was really important to me to become a full member of MSHSAA, because I want our students to have the opportunity to join a team if they would like,” said Principal Vicki Thurman. “We have had student athletes make the hard decision to attend a different school, because sports are such a big part of their identity and we didn’t have a program. I’m so glad we can offer this option, so students who need our support can attend Miriam and still continue with sports.”

In addition to sports through MSHSAA, both the high school and lower/middle school have an exciting slate of after-school activities available this year.

At the high school level, students have multiple options in the afternoon from Monday through Thursday, including Dungeons & Dragons, Rhythm Band (in partnership with Jazz St. Louis), Journalism and ESports. Cross Country and Bowling Club continue, as well.

Teachers are sponsoring clubs for board games, sewing and movies. For more information, visit https://www.miriamstl.org/high-school/student-life

Miriam High School also participates in Best Buddies, where students can connect with a supportive friend from a local high school who shares similar interests. This connection offers a chance to build meaningful friendships, gain social confidence, and be part of an inclusive community that celebrates everyone.

At the lower/middle school, students will have the opportunity to participate in a reader’s theater club (older students) and a Lego club (younger students). They have plans to expand options in the second semester to include Dungeons & Dragons and a Nexplore partnership for STEM clubs - and possibly more.

Today I was reminded of the lasting connections cast here when I had the privilege of giving one of our alumni, Isaac, and his father a tour of our Lower/Middle School Campus. Isaac is now considering a career in special education and is seeking a volunteer opportunity with us.

After nearly seven decades, Miriam Switching Post is closing for a hiatus

For nearly 70 years, Miriam Switching Post has been a staple in St. Louis’ resale market, offering upscale furniture, home decor, collectibles, art, and jewelry. Driven by donations and volunteers, the shop’s profits provide financial assistance to families who attend Miriam School, a school for students with learning differences.

In the News: Navigating new routines during back-to-school season

Often, returning to a school year routine can be an adjustment for students, something parents can begin preparing for in the weeks prior to the school year beginning.

“It’s really a good idea to sit with your child and make a check-list for their morning routine,” said Meg Bamford of Miriam School and Learning Center. “What are the things you need to do on their own to get ready in the morning?”
