A Message from the Head of School, Meg Bamford - September 2025
Meg Bamford | Head of Miriam School and Learning Center

Dear Miriam Community,

As the colors of fall begin to brighten our days, we see the same kind of transformation happening at Miriam. For many of our new students, this is the first place where they feel true belonging and confidence. It is inspiring to watch their strengths and passions emerge within our community.

The spirit of transformation at Miriam has always been fueled by generosity. For 70 years, the Switching Post has stood as a symbol of philanthropy in action. Donors have shared furniture, home décor, and jewelry, while 48 dedicated volunteers and our staff have invested countless hours preparing, cleaning, and selling these treasures. Their efforts have helped provide a small portion of financial aid to children who need Miriam’s life-changing education.

Yet, despite these best efforts, the Switching Post is now projected to operate at a loss. Rising expenses, including a 40% increase in rent, have outpaced revenue, and contributions to financial aid have decreased as a result. After thoughtful deliberation, our Board of Directors made the difficult decision to close the Brentwood location of the Switching Post on November 1st.

This decision is not an end; it is an opportunity for renewal and repositioning. A Switching Post 2.0 Committee will soon begin the work of reimagining the store’s future. Our vision is for a model that reduces overhead costs, finds a new location, and integrates career-readiness programming for students, ensuring that this beloved tradition continues to support Miriam for years to come.

As we prepare for this next chapter, I invite you to join us in two ways: by giving your time, as so many volunteers already have, and by supporting our incredible education. Together, these acts of generosity ensure we can continue to provide $2.2 million in financial aid annually while we plan for Switching Post 2.0.

The power of giving through time, love, and philanthropy is what sustains Miriam and transforms the lives of children. We are so grateful for your support.
With every good wish,

Meg Bamford, Head of Miriam School and Learning Center

Today I was reminded of the lasting connections cast here when I had the privilege of giving one of our alumni, Isaac, and his father a tour of our Lower/Middle School Campus. Isaac is now considering a career in special education and is seeking a volunteer opportunity with us.

After nearly seven decades, Miriam Switching Post is closing for a hiatus

For nearly 70 years, Miriam Switching Post has been a staple in St. Louis’ resale market, offering upscale furniture, home decor, collectibles, art, and jewelry. Driven by donations and volunteers, the shop’s profits provide financial assistance to families who attend Miriam School, a school for students with learning differences.

In the News: Navigating new routines during back-to-school season

Often, returning to a school year routine can be an adjustment for students, something parents can begin preparing for in the weeks prior to the school year beginning.

“It’s really a good idea to sit with your child and make a check-list for their morning routine,” said Meg Bamford of Miriam School and Learning Center. “What are the things you need to do on their own to get ready in the morning?”
