A Message from the Head of School, Meg Bamford - December 2025
Meg Bamford | Head of Miriam School and Learning Center

Dear Miriam Community,

Happy December! Thanksgiving has come and gone. There is so much joyful anticipation of the holidays in our buildings. On Sunday, some of our community members will be celebrating Hanukkah, while other children are eagerly anticipating Christmas.

At Miriam School, we talk a lot about the explicit instruction we offer our students, whether it is the steps needed to solve a long division problem or how to make friends with someone you just met. This carries over into the holiday season as well. For children (especially those who learn differently), it is essential to teach them these social skills rather than to expect them to eventually infer the art of giving gifts.

For example, teaching children the importance of giving is a powerful life skill. In fact, I wonder if it is even more gratifying for our kids than for other children? I believe our students are more attuned to others' feelings. Even though some of our children may not be able to identify or articulate those feelings, the sense of joy they experience when they give a gift (whether an object or an action) is incredibly positive. Also, it helps them build connections with others. "I saw this and thought of you" goes such a long way when building relationships with others.

Consider involving your children as much as possible in the season of giving. There are many demands that the holiday season places upon families. I know how easy it can be to be swept up in the craziness of the season. However, taking the time to sit and think together about how to make other people happy is so restorative and precious. With time and practice, I hope you will learn more about the depth of kindness and love your child possesses.

As 2025 draws to a close, I want to thank you so much for the gift of your support and shared love for our organization. It brings not only the skills and connections our children need, but also the hope of a beautiful future. We are so grateful to work with our students, whether they are in our K-12 School or through our Learning Center outreach services.

Wishing you a holiday season that is merry and bright,

Meg Bamford, Head of Miriam School and Learning Center

There is much excitement in the air about our BBQ and Variety Show at the High School on Friday, and the Art Festival and Talent Show at the Lower Middle School next Friday, April 17th. Many of our students come to us afraid to make eye contact or say hello, and then by this time of year, they are on stage singing their favorite Taylor Swift song or playing the piano, and there are tears of joy running down the faces of the crowd who know how much each of these children has overcome.

Paper stars with those four school values - along with the students’ names - wallpaper the windows around the school office. Whether it’s helping a peer or taking a deep breath during a difficult moment, school staff hand out stars when they see a student leaning into one of these four values - providing immediate, visual proof that their positive choices are noticed.

Today I was reminded of the lasting connections cast here when I had the privilege of giving one of our alumni, Isaac, and his father a tour of our Lower/Middle School Campus. Isaac is now considering a career in special education and is seeking a volunteer opportunity with us.
